BRIT and the City of Fort Worth have added compost bins to their annual fall sale. The 45-day, online sale begins July 15 and runs to Sept. 7. The sale will feature Rain Water Solutions’ 50-gallon, 100 percent recycled plastic rain barrel for just $72.50. New to the line-up, Rain Water Solutions’ 65-gallon compost bin for $67.50. The sale is open to all North Texas area residents. Rain barrels and compost bins can be purchased online with a credit card at www.rainbarrelprogram.org/britfortworth.
Pick-up day is Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at BRIT’s parking lot, 1700 University Dr., Fort Worth, TX 76107.
BRIT is located inside the Fort Worth Botanic Garden complex.
Rain barrels collect rainwater from roof-tops by being placed underneath or attached to a home’s rain gutter downspout. Rainwater is typically unused and sent down the storm drain. Rainwater collected is perfect for watering gardens. Customers can purchase more than one rain barrel and link them together for increased capacity and water savings.
The 50-gallon rain barrels are made in the USA from 100 percent recycled plastic and feature a child-proof locking lid; bug-proof screen; a three-fourth-inch ball valve that easily connects to a garden hose; and two built-in overflow ports, one of which can be used to link additional barrels. All parts are included and ready to set up.
Compost bins hold 80 gallons and are also made from 100 percent recycled plastic. They are easy to assemble with no tools required.
"The rain barrel and compost bin sale is open to everyone, not just to Fort Worth residents," said Hilda Zuniga, Fort Worth Water Department.
The cumulative effect of rainwater harvesting and composting can have a positive impact on your flower and vegetable gardens and are smart and efficient alternatives to watering with tap water and using fertilizers.
