Timely Tip for August Gardeners
From Calloway’s Nursery

Color for the heat of Summer! How many of you scoff at the idea and mumble under your breath that it’s impossible? Well, we have a Summer color program called “FlameProof for Texas” which will make a believer out of you!
Every year over 3,000 plants are tested at the Dallas Arboretum Trial Gardens. The very best of those are awarded the “FlameProof™” Plant award. This award is reserved for those plants that can take the Texas heat and thrive in our hot Summers. If you're looking for plants that will flourish in our hot tropical summers, then look no farther. These winners will look great in your garden from May right up until first frost.
Our “FlameProof” Plants program started in June but the selection will continue through the end of August. Each week a new variety is featured and for this month we will be receiving the following plants:

  • Lobularia ‘Snow Princess’-Blooms fragrant white flowers and grows only 4 to 6 inches tall.
  • Torenia ‘Catalina Midnight Blue’-Dark blue Snapdragon-like blooms on plants 8 to 16 inches tall.
  • Coleus ‘Kingswood Torch’-Vivid dark foliage thrives in full to part sun.
  • Coleus ‘Royal Glissade’-Light moss-green leaves with raspberry touches will tolerate full sun or part shade.
  • Salvia ‘Mystic Spires’-True blue flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

Don’t let the heat of the Summer keep you from enjoying your gardens. Check out our collection of “FlameProof” plants and enjoy garden color through Fall!

Timely Tip for July Gardeners
From Calloway’s Nursery

Welcome to the lazy dog days of Summer but wait, it’s time to prepare and plant your Fall vegetable garden!  Did you know that many Fall-grown vegetables have better flavor? Since the days are getting shorter many vegetable crops store more sugar and have better flavor than Spring grown crops. Once established, weeding, watering and tending will all take place in a little cooler, less humid conditions.

Prepare your soil much like in the Spring.  Add at least three inches of organic compost and three inches of Expanded Shale to the garden. Select vegetables your family likes and choose from transplants or seeds. Apply Calloway’s Organic Fertilizer or Lasting Performance timed-release plant food. Remember to continue feeding your garden on a regular schedule. Complete the planting by adding two-to three inches of mulch to maintain moisture, help prevent weeds and to maintain moderate soil temperatures.

Vegetables for a Fall garden include Tomatoes, Peppers, Snap Beans, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots and Lettuce. Keep your garden well watered until Fall rains begin. Once everything is planted, sit back and enjoy a second growing season!
We will be hosting a free clinic in every store on Fall Vegetable Gardens on Saturday, July 3rd at 10:15 am. Get the scoop on Fall Gardening-Texas style!  Click here for a complete list of our FREE in-store clinics.

Timely Tip for June Gardeners
From Calloway’s Nursery

Calloway’s Nursery is dedicated to educating young and old alike in being better stewards of our earth. Our weekly Saturday clinics are designed to provide gardening information for adults. Last Summer, we offered several children clinics during the week and had a great response! This Summer we will offer the Callie’s Kids Summer Series the first and third Wednesday in June, July, and August at 9:30. Kids will plant, color, learn and explore plants and nature with one of our garden experts. Go here for more details.

Planting a Butterfly garden is fun for all ages. First, choose a location with plenty of sun and protection from strong winds.  Add a supply of dark rocks or mass of dark pebbles to collect the morning sun for the butterflies to rest and warm up. Sink a container full of sand or gravel into the ground and keep it moist.  This will serve as a resting spot for some to drink and obtain minerals.

Attracting butterflies to your garden is easy.  Select foliage plants as food for the larvae or caterpillar, and flowering plants to provide nectar for adults.  Butterflies are attracted by fragrance, flower-shape and color.  They are mostly active in mid and late summer, so you should make sure that you have lots of nectar-rich plants and flowers blooming by then.  If you plant large sections of flowers of the same color, it will make it easier for them to find your garden.  You should plant flowers that will bloom at different times of the year and ones that bloom even at different times of the day and night, this way, you will always have something in bloom and they will always be attracting butterflies.  Our free clinic on June 12 at 10:15 am will go into more details about planting a Butterfly Garden.

Timely Tip for January Gardeners
From Calloway’s Nursery

January is a good time to evaluate your gardens and start planning for the Spring. Prepare a sketch of your landscape complete with all permanent fixtures including the house, sidewalks, fences and trees. Keep notes of what did well and what needs to be replaced. Remember, your landscape is a continual work in progress!
Now is the time to prune fruit trees and grapevines. Shade trees and evergreen shrubs can be trimmed to maintain shape and to remove damaged or low lying branches. Do not top Crape Myrtles; only prune to remove damaged branches. Trim summer blooming shrubs and vines to tidy their appearance. Leave a smooth cut flush with the trunk or branch from which you pruned. Apply pruning paint to cuts larger than a pinkie to prevent diseases and insect infestations.

For more information, please join us for FREE in-store clinics regarding gardening topics. Clinics are held in every store.
